On the 14th and 15th December 2018, at the Fleckney Village Hall, by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd, we will be performing Robert Harlings play... STEEL MAGNOLIAS.
Set in the fictional north-western Louisiana parish of Chinquapin, Steel Magnolias spans over 3 years and follows a group of women who grapple with a multitude of life’s circumstances. Full of wise-cracking repartee, the women are witty, intelligent and sometimes slightly wild.
Annelle, who’s not sure if she is still married, is the eager new assistant
to the outspoken romantic Truvy who dispenses shampoo and free advice to the town’s rich
curmudgeon and dog-loving Ouiser, eccentric millionaire Miss Clairee and classic Southern mother M’Lynn, whose pretty daughter Shelby is about to get married.
As Annelle transforms from a shy, anxious newcomer to a good-time girl, then repentant Christian, Clairee attempts to find a new sense of purpose as a widow and Ouiser manages her distaste for the world around her against her cynical but strong love for her friends. Truvy becomes a mother-figure to Annelle whilst also reflecting on the difficult relationships with the men in her family.
Shelby is a determined young woman whose energy, humour and enthusiasm is hindered only by her ongoing medical battles. M’Lynn’s constant attempts to persuade and protect her daughter reflects the beauty and fragility of Shelby’s life and the profound affect her choices inevitably have on her Mother.
An enduring tale of love, loss and friendship, we follow the lives of six Southern women whose underlying strengths of love and friendship make this play truly touching to behold.
